This study increases knowledge and understanding of middle managers’ ethical decision-making and behaviour within the context of Finnish higher education. The aim of the research is to develop a new framework for ethical decision-making and behaviour by combining prior theories and empirical knowledge. This dissertation consists of an introductory essay and three articles. Managers’ Moral Struggle : A Case Study on Ethical Dilemmas and Ethical Decision-making in the Context of Immigration

This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. Creating Managerial Ethical Profiles: An Exploratory Cluster Analysis

This study profiles managers according to the ethical criteria they bring to their managerial decision making. Profiling was based on exploratory cluster analysis of responses of academics & students and small business managers to a multidimensional questionnaire. The data were collected through a self-reporting survey (n=82) administrated to the two cohorts. An agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis was then performed to the two groups separately on the 8 ethical subscales from the Managerial Ethical Profile (MEP).
